Dear David

Thanks for explaining Gears. I see now that Jetty can initialise it
locally, without online access.

You asked
>Is STEP a web application that can have an offline mode or is STEP a
>software suite connected together for easy distribution on USB stick?

The answer is both. It has to work as a standalone, and ideally on an
external module such as a USB stick or SD card without installation,
and yet it will also need online access for some functions which we
can't legally distribute (such as fair-use access to copyrighted
material) and for some functions which require more files than could
be distributed (such as the high-scale versions of maps).

If we concentrate on something that is stand-alone, the online
functionality will be easy to add.
It looks like it is possible to build something which has a browser
front end linking to a java engine.

As I understand it, you are suggesting we use:
- Gears to link the browser to java and back
- JSword to provide the Biblical tools via APIs
- Jetty to initialise Gears and possibly other server functions (eg PHP?)
- Eclipse to develop the project in java

Is that right?
Chris - does this work with your model for using Jetty?
