Apologies for the confusion.

The solution I have in place does not use Gears. The browser just requests a web page (whether the server is running locally or on the internet).

The demo indeed only used GWT not Gears.

Chris, I think I have misunderstood.
I thought we needed GEARS to negotiate between JSword and Browsers.
Did your demo POC work just with GWT and without GEARS?
