Just to let you know that we may not be able to store dates as dates in our database... They are so far back in the past that a lot of databases won't support them as such. In order to maintiaini their chronological order, it may be worth storing their epoch time (time since 1970, which in our case is going to be very negative!)
The one we were probably going to settle for was Apache Derby. I've posted on HSQLDB, although mainly for interest as I seem to remember upon investigation that it's single threaded and therefore wouldn't support our web architecture...
